Question for my FL

Sim 3 Viola 3
I'm toying (rather seriously) with the idea of getting a personal domain and using it for a permanent email address that won't be affected by my ISP or a hosting site going out of business or not providing POP3 service. Since I suffered total brain-freeze trying to decide whether to go with .org or .net or .me or .name (which seems hard to register for some reason), or .us or WHATEVER, I thought I'd ask if anyone out there has done this (I seem to remember someone mentioning it) and if you have any advice or suggestions.

Thanks!

I do have my own domain (or two). Personally (this was before .me and .name), I elected to do .net. My reasoning was that .com was commercial, .org was non-profit, and while I kind of counted as non-profit, it was just not quite in *that* way. Except for my one .com (which still isn't commercial) I've always registered .net.

From what I've read .me and .name might not be recognized by some fill-out forms, possibly making one of the older types more useful if less appropriate. .net is nice and general, but not available for my name. Thanks for the info! (Hmm, maybe .info? :))

Esti gave good advice, but for the record, most people, corporations, and government outfits these days really don't care what top level domain you pick. So many thousands of non-profit setups prefer .com for the name recognition, and so many thousands of others pick a random one of the remaining options just because .com is already gone.

I'm one of the former. Rangerwiki is obviously non-profit, but there was no way I wasn't getting a .com. XD

Yeah, there's that too. I shouldn't be making a major crisis out of this, but I get compulsive that way. At least my address as cmar is all set since I already own the timelinefiction.net domain.
