Sad

I heard about Farrah Fawcett at lunchtime today. While I was never a fan, she was a big icon of my youth and showed considerable talent in her roles after Charlie's Angels. Sad as her death is, everyone was expecting it.

When I heard about Michael Jackson over the radio in the grocery store, it was a complete shock. I'm surprised at how upset I am. It'll make no sense to people for whom he's always been that creepy pedophile guy, but he was an amazing and charismatic talent. Whatever bad he's done, that's what I'm remembering now.

I missed pretty much all of MJ's pre-1990 career. I've seen the videos since on retrospectives, but I wasn't there firsthand so it doesn't mean as much.

I'm old enough to remember the Black or White video from 1991(??) and how it was truly epic. I used to watch it whenever it would come on VH1, just... spellbound. That was back when MJ was still that awesome big brother figure for kids, and he had Macaulay Culkin in the video and the whole bit. Kids at my school used to sing and dance like him at recess, even into the mid-90s.

And I fully, FULLY admit that "Will You Be There" from Free Willy is still one of my favorite songs. It's so beautiful and dreamy and it always makes me think of the ocean. And pretty orcas. :) It was the only cassette single I ever owned.

It's so sad that he was in the process of making such a big comeback. I wonder what happened.

Possibly the most poignant thing of all is that MTV has taken a break from their usual endless repeats of Billionaire 17 year old Bimbos Spending Money and Backstabbing Each Other and is actually playing MUSIC VIDEOS again, and reporting on his death. ;_;

Being older than you, I remember him as a child in the Jackson Five - he's been a huge star for most of his life. And then Billie Jean, his big breakthrough as an adult, then Beat It and of course Thriller - great music, great videos, good memories. I really liked the guy, both enjoyed his music and had a crush for a while. Such a shame that later things went the way they did.

ETA: Off to watch MTV.

My brother texted my mom with this news and she told me, and I refused to believe it. I always supported MJ, I love pop music and I remember saying he should have started producing music for other people, because he was a true genius. He will be missed, very much. They just don't make them like that anymore.

He certainly was a genius, and one of a kind. Maybe a lot of people don't realize how much influence he had on music, and for how many years. They didn't call him the King of Pop for nothing.

I also took his death rather hard since I listened to much of his music growing up. I had a poster of him on my wall (in hindsight, wow parents. fail.), I have his discography...

Many find it hard to be sympathetic to his issues but I've always been. Maybe its my fannish side showing but I saw him as a deeply tragic figure, warped by a lifetime of being in the spotlight, possibly a victim of child abuse himself, although we'll never know that for sure. The fact that he was tragic to the bitter end makes this very sad as well. I would have liked to see him have one more concert or better days.

Tragic, certainly. No doubt he was mentally unbalanced to some degree, and I'm sure a lot of that was due to what must have been a very bizarre childhood. It kind of makes sense that he was so obsessed with childhood later on. Whether or not he did the things he was accused of doing, he was certainly a victim also himself.

Yesterday was truly a shocking and depressing day, with 3 showbiz icons passing away. And of course MJ was the biggest and most unexpected shocker. Having been born in the 70's, I've always heard his songs on the radio, and while I've never considered seeing him in concert or screaming my lungs out if I ever met him, I've nevertheless respected his talent and enjoyed his music very much.
(and yeah, I admit it: His antics and bizarre behaviors amused me, too)
He will definitely be missed!

Three??? Who else? Or are you talking about the Jeff Goldblum rumor? (Which is not true.)

Whether you were a fan or not, MJ affected all of us. I've heard it said that he single-handedly saved the music industry, and that he's up there with Elvis and the Beatles as rock/pop icons. And it's true.

I agree. Michael Jackson, Madonna, the Beatles - pretty much everyone in the world knows those names.
Oh, and Ed McMahon(sp?) was the third one who passed away yesterday.

Right - I actually hadn't heard about Ed McMahon. His death seems to have gotten almost completely forgotten in the uproar. Same for Farah Fawcett - not that much about it in the media compared to MJ.
