I've tried googling this, and nada. Terms used: transfer of custody parent death california, california laws custody parent death, california adoption law

Location: Present-day California, LA to be exact.

I've got a couple, A and B, who had a child together after a one-night stand, B only found out about the child after A's death when the child was a year old. A had no other surviving relatives- the child either goes to B or foster care.

Now, my question is about the exact chain of custody for the child. I'm assuming that, after the death of the mother, she would temporarily be placed in the care of Child Services. Assuming her father is willing and able to take immediate custody of her when he finds out, what would be the approximate time frame before she is released to him? Would Child Services do any kind of background check, or would his name on the child's birth certificate be enough? If not, what kind of tests/paperwork would they have for him, and would him being in a same-sex relationship have any bearing on his eligibilty? (I'm talking unofficially here; I know Cali is one of the most liberal US states, but how likely is it that someone would throw a wrench in the works based on sexuality?)

Thanks in advance for all your help- it's much appreciated.

Nestle Red Mug is even more disgusting in cold coffee than in hot coffee. Matter of fact, in hot coffee it's just not tastey and in cold coffee it's outright disgusting.

Today's lecturer at the Genetics course didn't feel like teaching so we were relased an hour ahead of time, which I didn't object to in the lease.

The PI ruined the manuscript even worse than the usual.

I think I have the bulk of the results/discussion section for the Genetics take-home exam. I need to write the intro, and that'll give me the bibliography also. I think it'll totall in three pages when I am allowed up to four - pretty good. As for the content, well, that's for the lecturer to decide. I did manage to pinpoint a finding the researchers kinda hid under the rug, so that has to count for something, right?

(And I probably have the best English in class. Which should prejudice the lecturer some, right? Seeing as I was assigned to the one of the four lecturer who's a visiting proferssor for the States and naturally taught in English and not Hebrew.)

On clothing

I've only seen it twice, but already it annoys me to no end.

She could feel people staring at her; they thought she was a whore.

In both cases the Sues women in question were wearing period appropriate clothes and not hanging out in that part of town frequented by whores and people who want to make use of their services. Maybe it's just me, but unless I see someone in that particular part of town dressed particularly scampy, I'm not going to think they are a whore. But then, I barely even notice strangers I pass in the street much less have opinions about their profession.

So, dear author, no, I am not going to feel sympathy for your character for being judged by perfect strangers. I might if the judgment had been passed realistically and wrongly; as it stands it's more likely the judgment is unrealistic yet right.

Thomas M. Disch is gone

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 9:04 AM
via [info]catrambo, I saw that SF writer Thomas M. Disch has died -- a suicide, alas, apparently on July 4.

In reponse to the notice posted on [info]ellen_datlow's LJ, [info]madrobins posted a wonderful memory:

My memory of Tom will always be colored by an afternoon that he and Stan Shaffer--a fellow Clarionite--spent at a junior college in New Jersey at a symposium on speculative literature. Stan had introduced me to to Tom, and he had a slight "don't embarrass me in front of my friend" air about him. So when the symposium was over and we were walking over the lawn--a series of immaculately groomed hills--and I put down my bag and books and lay down and rolled down the green, Stan was appalled. And then Tom, bless him forever, said "Oh, yes," handed his stuff to Stan, and rolled down the hill too. I think we went up and down that hill a few times, and Stan finally joined in.

I know Tom was depressed these last few years; I'm so happy to have this joyful recollection to pair with his extraordinary writing.

I have a very strong memory of rolling down a hill at Carnegie-Mellon University with [info]cyano and several of her friends one night, ages ago, back when I was still in high school. My high school sweetheart had just dumped me (for the first time), and getting the hell out of town for the weekend seemed like a remarkably good idea. We tore around campus goofing off the way geeks do, and at some point decided that rolling down the hill was a logical thing to do. It was; if you haven't done it lately, give it a shot.

Nuggets of joy where you can, folks. I'm sorry Disch found his too brief and too few.

Crono's name is not Chrono. His name doesn't have the H in it. Chrono, as in Chrono Trigger, has the H. Crono does not. (You can't fall back on the "His name is Chrono in the Japanese version!" excuse because you're not using the Japanese names for any other characters, anyway.)

If you're going to claim you're the biggest fan of Chrono Trigger EVER in your author's notes, that you're even cosplaying as one of the characters when you go to buy the DS remake of Chrono Trigger... at least get the protagonist's name right.

Dear SG-1 fanfic writer

Jack O'Neill is not a rapist. Sam Carter is not a wimp who would just allow herself to be raped. Daniel Jackon, Teal'c and Janet Frasier (not 'Fraser' as you spelled it so many times) would not help Jack cover up the fact that he raped Sam. Are we watching the same show here?

Go watch the series again

Green gas

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 3:07 AM
I'm doing some worldbuilding for a potential story, and there are two planets in this one system that are covered with an atmosphere of toxic green gas. Kinda like Venus, but green. Searches for "green gas" yield only some kind of propellant. I need to figure out what kind of toxic gases might give a planet a green color. Thanks in advance!

The appearance of a badly healed leg

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 11:58 AM
If a tibia or femur is fractured and badly healed, resulting in malunion or pseudarthrosis, does the leg look abnormal (e.g. bent in some way) with clothes on? I suppose that it would in any case be shorter than the other one, but are there other visible characteristics or symptoms?

I've googled, also using the image search, and wiki'd with search terms such as 'malunion', 'pseudarthrosis', 'false joint', 'badly healed bone fracture' and read some articles / websites on medicine and treating bone fractures before the 20th century (that's when the story takes place), but haven't found an answer. The photos I've seen have mostly been X-rays (except in the case of congenital pseudrthrosis, but that's not what I'm looking for), which don't tell what the leg with such a fracture would actually look like.

Thanks a lot in advance!

That's what I get for reading rare-pairs.

Kind of a flipside to my previous rant.

If Tara happens to be with someone besides Willow in your fic, don't bash the hell out of Willow. They had that badness between them in season six, obviously, but that didn't extend to physical violence and Willow is not a whore, etc.

Why is there this compulsion amongst writers to turn characters into abusive jerk-offs out of nowhere? The temptation to lock them in a room and force them to watch/read the canon material over and over again is overwhelming.

I laughed. I cried. I broke out in hives.

  • Jul. 7th, 2008 at 1:57 AM
Today I found a D.Gray-Man fic that caused my face to make faces that I was not aware my face could make.

In this fic, Allen is a female who secretly lives as a male under the advisement of General Cross. Why he wants her to keep her true gender a secret is never explained. In any case, Allen also is not an orphan in this story. It turns out that she secretly has a family with a ton of brothers who own and live in a fancy inn. In this story, Allen traveled around with Mana simply because she wanted to escape her loud siblings. This makes perfect sense, right? In any case, Allen's true gender is discovered by Kanda. They proceed to have sex and start talking about making babies that very day. Naturally. Allen becomes pregnant.

Meanwhile, Tyki is threatening and pressuring Lavi into sex. He tells him that if Lavi does what he wants him to, he'll make sure the other exorcists will never be harmed. (Because of course the Earl would stop his search for the Heart because Tyki wants sweet exorcist ass.) Tyki injects Lavi with something that makes it hard for Lavi to move. He throws him in his car (Yes, his car. A black Toyota, no less) and begins to molest him and call him things like "Bunny Boo" and "Bunny Poo" and other things that make bile rise in my throat. Lavi reacts to said drugging and molestation by admonishing Tyki's smoking habit, noticing how hot he is, and calling him "Tyki-pon". Because if you're going to be badtouched by the enemy, you might as well give them a cute nickname. They then bond over their shared love of anime music. Cue Tyki driving them to a hotel for a sex scene in which Lavi's anus is referred to as his "inner hole" the entire time. Hot.

Lavi passes out afterwards and wakes up to find a note explaining that he's been injected with something again. This time it's an injection to turn him into a girl for 9 months, because he is now pregnant with Tyki's baby. And thus begins the Allen and Lavi double pregnancy hijinks at The Order which, by the way, is also a school in this fic. Where Tyki comes to be a history teacher. For some reason nobody has a problem with this.

And so we get many beautiful scenes out of this situation, such as the one where Allen and Kanda go on a double-date to the mall with Tyki and Lavi. The "girls" try on pretty dresses and squee over baby clothes. Tyki buys Lavi pocky to cure her pregnancy cravings. All is right with the world and everyone is blissfully happy.

Except Lenalee, who is a psychotic and murderous bitch in this fic. In fact, she loves Kanda and is jealous of his and Allen's true love. She slaps Allen, calls her a bitch, and proceeds to make plans to kill Allen's baby when it is born. Or, better yet, to push Allen down a flight of stairs to kill the fetus! Because surely that is how Lenalee would react to her two best friends starting a family together. Murdering their infant. Apparently fans agree with this characterization of Lenalee. If you look at the reviews, there are multiple ones applauding it. Says one, even, "I was going to make lenalee like that in my new story!" Oh goodie! It's contagious.

Cut for sexual talk and brain melting madness. )

Kanda making tiger sounds? Awesome.

Morning Post

Skipping seminar today. I'm allowed to do so once per semester, and I need to make up for the work I forgot to do yesterday.

(Typical Yehu and me, that. Constant miscommunications because I seemingly shrug off what I forget or mix up, but then I turn around and do exactly what's needed to cover it up, I just don't bother with wasting words or guilt on it. In the meantime, Yehu's doing the guilt thing for both of us and I typically get angry in the process, which usually makes him back off. We've beat around this bush so many times it's familiar.)

Funny how when walking outside in the sunlight i'm not hot, but then once I step into the building and stand still? Oh yeah, then I feel it. At least the lab and the hallway were properly chilled - not cold but not warm - so I could cool down.

One 0.75L bottle down, time to refill.

And work. Once my head slows down.

Injuries Causing Paraplegia

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 7:51 PM
I'm writing a story where I need to have a character who has suffered an injury to her spine, most likely from a fall, that causes paraplegia. I've searched for various combinations of: fall, spinal injury, paraplegia, broken bones

I did find this page, which appears to have good information, but the causes are too vague for my purposes.

Context )
Any suggestions or direction to information that could help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, that's that

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 11:37 PM
Word count - 766

It was easy tonight, after last night I realized I needed to focus. I think it's time to pull out Donald Trump's book to inspire myself again.

Mom and I walked again - I had more fun with myself and my ipod last night. It's always where she wants to turn around or what she wants to do. All I want is it to be the same. If we're turning around in one spot one time, we should do it the same the next time. I don't know why it bothers me but it does.

I left Donna a note, telling her that I was dropping out of the cna class, and that I'm going to be looking for a new job over the next couple months. And I asked for some more hours to tide me over, even if it's not this month, then I need them next month. The next two weeks, I'm only working 5 days - but I took two from Helen. So 7 days out of 14 where I usually work 9 or 10.

Committed, House MD (House/Wilson)

Title: Committed
Fandom: House
Pairing: House/Wilson
Rating: PG
Summary"House, I take you to be my not-quite-lawfully wedded husband,”
Note:  A big Thank You to [info]nemesishamartiaand [info]eitherwayokayfor the betas.  In the interest of full disclosure, [info]eitherwayokay wrote House some very funny vows that I just adored.  But I'm a sap and I chose to keep things the way I had them.  However, that advice did lead to me incorporating a little more humor into that section of the story.  And talking to them both helped me sort out what it was that I wasn't liking about the story, which is essentially just that there's not as much room for dialogue in a wedding scene.  Truthfully, it's still not my favorite for that reason, but I hope you all enjoy it.

The rest of the series can be found here.  BTW - I reserve the right to backtrack and write events that happened before the wedding.

Dear 10 year old fanfiction writers:

It might have escaped your attention, but you would NOT have sex with a person you have only known for a few hours unless you are either a) a hooker, b) Drunk/under the influence of drugs or c) being raped.

Adoption Laws in Japan

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 11:53 PM
Setting: Present day Japan, likely near Tokyo

Research: I've searched google (Japanese adoption laws, adoption in Japan, etc)  but all I can find is information regarding international adoptions, ie an American couple trying to adopt a Japanese child.

Can someone provide me with information on how the adoption process within Japan works? The character trying to adopt is a single man, in his late 20's. He's generally healthy, if that makes a difference, and is trying to adopt a child that has no disabilities and has no special needs requirements.  What I'm specifically interested in is:

-How long it would take from contacting the agency to recieving full custody of the child

-What type of contact he would have with his potential son/daughter- only letters for the first few months? When would he be able to visit the child? Would he be able to actually take the child from their foster home/orphanage for an afternoon outing? Would he be able to take them for a stay overnight?

-If the child's birth parents or any relatives are still alive, would he have to meet with them?

-What type of legal process would he have to go through? Court dates? Some kind of inspection of where he lives?

Links to helpful sites would also be appreciated. Thanks!

Megami Tensei fandom,

Really, I'm glad you exist. You are mostly badfic free (heck, the only self-insert fic I saw was decent!) But, please,
tell me which game you are writing about in your summaries, k?
I mean, it is a fairly reasonable assumption its P3, since its a bitch to find something other then that, but...
Any Megami Tensei fic recs? Anything?

Could someone explain the pureblood mania in the HP fandom to me?

I mean, I've read fics where purebloods have inherently stronger magic than non-purebloods--despite that Voldemort nearly took over the world twice, Harry has shown himself to be a pretty competent wizard, purebloods Ron and Neville aren't exactly the epitomes of power, and oh, two words: HERMIONE GRANGER.

I've read fics where purebloods have bloodlines stretching back millenia...Which meant that either Anglo-Saxon barbarians kept unexpectedly good family histories or they were originally Romans...Which would be fine if those fics didn't also claim that those purebloods families had been "tied to the land" for those selfsame millenia or something ludicrous like that.

So what's with the glorification of "purebloods"? It's a pretty obviously Aryanesque contrivance. There's nothing in canon that has shown in the least that purebloods are any better than non-purebloods. Indeed, the books go out of their way to emphasize that point. Is there some sort of "Let's Worship the Aristocracy, Because Obviously They've Always Been Such Great People" club that I haven't been invited to?
